The first visit occurred while I was taking pictures of plants at the Arizona State University Arboretum. My little friend showed up, apparently unconcerned by my presence and went to work on extracting nectar from the nearby Lantana.
You may ask, "How do you know it is a he?" Well, as with most birds, the males are brightly colored and the females are rather drab in color. This was an Anna's Hummingbird, one of the hummingbird species that lives year-round in the deserts of Arizona.
Here is another little friend who took a break from eating to rest in a close-by Sycamore tree.
The sun was setting and he was happy to just perch and watch the day end while I happily clicked away with my camera.
Can you see him? Of course, he was not going to make taking pictures that easy. So he moved a bit. He is located just beneath the largest branch, he looks like a leaf. His green coloring blends well with the leaves.
I just love the vibrant green color of the Anna's Hummingbird. Soon after I finished taking pictures, my little friend soon flew away home. I am grateful he stayed until I was finished.

How beautiful Noelle! We get the ruby-throated hummers here. I was so sad to see them head south ... it is great to see your little friend. I have never seen an Anna before. Their iridescent green backs are very similar to the Ruby's. I love to see them perching... and the photo where he looks like a leaf... so lovely... all of the photos! Carol
Oh I just love hummingbirds -my aunt in Arkansas used to attract so many. I have not been successful at all.
Your Anna's hummingbird there is just beautiful

What a very nice little visitor and so glad you had your camera to capture her.
Cool-I adore hummingbirds-they are such delightful creatures to watch..
I love your visitors, Noelle! You have captured them beautifully. He/she did blend in so well with the eucalyptus leaves, I could barely see it. We have them here during the warmer months, mostly ruby throats. I miss them already.

Hi Noelle, beauties they are! We get the biggest kick out of them in the the summer and their inquisitive nature; they literally "buzz" me... come within a foot or so, hang out a bit, then off they go.
Great pictures. I really had to look hard in the one in the tree, he did blend in so well. They really are hard to get pictures of since they move so fast. I love seeing them resting on a branch. We have Anna's here year round too.
Your pics of humming birds are amazing.
Good photos. It is hard to catch the hummers. They are such wonderful visitors to the garden.
These are among my favorites so I plant lost of things to attract them. They can be quite entertaining.
And now he's famous and his picture is moving around the world at a fast pace.
I can never capture a picture of one ....so I come to other blogs to see them "up close"

Now I know where my little friends go for the winter. :)
Cool pics,Noelle!
I love this! Especially the poses on the Eucalyptus tree. I love how he looks like one of the leaves. It is always a treat for me to see other hummingbirds as here in the North, we only have the Ruby Throated Hummers.
Oh, what a cutie! I love hummingbirds though try as I might I rarely, if ever, get such great photos.
So lovely to see these hummingbirds! Glad you could take these photos to share with us. I love the last photo...blending so beautifully with the leaves. If I hadn't read the text, i'd have missed the bird. Even the lantana colours are so vibrant!
Your pictures are wonderful. What a nice visitor. :)
