Why I Haven’t Planted My Vegetable Garden Yet…

New-Side-Vegetable-Garden

I have two vegetable gardens, just sitting there, ready to plant.

This was my newest vegetable garden, last February, just before I planted it.

Just a couple of months later, it was full of growing bush beans, cucumbers, corn and much more….

The flowers not only made the garden look pretty, but they also helped to repel bad bugs and attract pollinators.

So why haven’t I planted it yet?

Well, I had all good intentions to get it done last weekend.  BUT, my kids, specifically my youngest daughter, had other plans….

1. On Sunday morning as we were getting ready for church – she decided that she wanted to run away and live in the desert with the coyotes.  She has this idealized view of the desert from one of her favorite tv shows.

Thankfully, she only made it to the next door neighbor’s house before she reconsidered.

2. Monday was a crazy, busy day and I was happy that I was able to keep my head above water.

3. Tuesday, as I was making my toast for breakfast, I noticed teeth marks in the butter.  From the distinctive shape of the teeth marks – I knew that my youngest daughter was the culprit, eating our butter.

My husband then told me that he caught her eating flour.

*Have any of you ever had your kids eat some strange things?

4. Finally, last night, she started crying and it turned out that she had stuck a plastic fork up her nose and one of the tines had broken off.  We used a flashlight and we could see it, but it was too far up her nose for us to get it.

So, we made a trip to urgent care.  Thankfully, they were able to get it out easily with long tweezers.

Tomorrow, I have 2 consults.  BUT, come Friday morning – I will be out in my garden planting seeds (by myself, without my kids who will be in school).

I must admit that I am looking forward to the break from being a mom and just enjoying working out in the garden.

How about you?

Do you have any fun stories of things that your kids have done, ate or stuck up their nose?

I’d love to hear about them 🙂

I would love to know what you are planting! And yes, Tessa came in the other day having stuck chicken feed up her nose. So gross. No trip to the urgent care needed though 🙂

    Fork? Nose?
    Lucky, lucky child!

    Holy cow, that'd be scary.

My sister used to stick stuff up her nose. Most memorable was the pea incident. I don't remember if it required a doctor's visit… but I think it might have. Stuck pea was very stuck. But not nearly so scary as a plastic tine. *shudders*

She used to stick food in the corner of her eye, too. Lettuce. Weird stuff.

This is a kid that later went on to be a straight-A student. I have no idea what was going on in her toddler mind. Strange, strange kid.

My son (only son of four) used to walk in his sleep as a child (they're all in their 20's now). While walking in his sleep, he also ate strange things such as butter, raw eggs, unsweetened baking chocolate, and whatever he could get his hands on. We never could convince a doctor (and it took me some time to convince my ex) that he was sleep eating. Is your daughter eating in her sleep? That would explain the butter and the flour. Just a thought.

    Love your blog, BTW.

I know what you mean about having a nice break from being a mom to just garden. In a couple of weeks, I'll be taking time off work while my kid is in camp. I plan to plant my fall garden then. I've been mapping out garden grids and studying seed packets for weeks in anticipation!

We were visiting friends (he's a fireman) with our little daughter years ago. We were eating dinner and I noticed that her eyes were watering and her nose was running. She kept rubbing her nose and eyes. We found out that she had stuck one of the pork and beans up her nose. The fireman sprung into action and used his nasal thingy and suctioned that bean right out of her nose.
She was always doing naughty little things, like sticking her little play forks and spoons in the outlets. This was before we covered outlets. Why do some kids do things like that? She lived through childhood and doesn't do things like that anymore.

When I was little (2nd grade maybe) I stuck a dry olive pit in my nose, which required a trip to the drs office…also, later on, stapled a finger, and in home ec, sewed a finger! hmm, not sure what that says…I too am interested what you are planting, our garden is ready now as well. Planning on beets, swiss chard, lettuce…do you plant any flowers in this season?

This post is hilarious! When I was a kid, I used to eat butter too! Now I look back thinking how gross that was, especially since as an adult I am vegan! I also had a tendency to stick things in my nose too! One morning I woke up with a balled up piece of tin foil off a hersheys kiss in my nose and had to get it taken out at the hospital! My son, who just turned 5 this week, is half Vietnamese and has a tiny nose but he some how got a raw pea jammed in there and we had to break it in pieces to get it out! Kids are too funny!

This is the exact vegetable garden I want to plant!!! What is the best time of year to plant a vegetable garden in AZ? What veggies grow best? Is it better to have it in a shady area or sunny? Thanks so much in advance for your help!!

    Hello Peniel,

How wonderful that you want to plant a vegetable garden. Typically, October is the best time to plant cool-season vegetables and March is when many of the warm-season vegetables are planted. So, you would want to keep that timetable in mind when you build your vegetable garden. Vegetables need a sunny area to grow – but you will need to provide shade for them in the summer (I use shade cloth).

I wish for you good luck and delicious vegetables!
