New Article for ‘Newbie’ Desert Gardeners
Wouldn’t it be great to have a regional guide for things to do, places to stay and great places to eat?
The EastValleyGuide is a great resource for those who live in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa and Tempe.
I was asked to write an article for them about the challenges of desert gardening and some simple tips for growing a beautiful, low-maintenance landscape.
I hope you’ll take a minute or two to read it.

Noelle Johnson, aka, 'AZ Plant Lady' is a author, horticulturist, and landscape consultant who helps people learn how to create, grow, and maintain beautiful desert gardens that thrive in a hot, dry climate. She does this through her consulting services, her online class Desert Gardening 101, and her monthly membership club, Through the Garden Gate. As she likes to tell desert-dwellers, "Gardening in the desert isn't hard, but it is different."
I like that well-said approach, "it's not hard, just different", and wonder why so few here are accepting of that. I'll keep it up, anyway – vive la différence! (and great article)

Ditto, great article! A couple things? ‘Fall’ is not based on the date, but the temperature. Use gravel for mulch, not redwood chips. (What other things did I do wrong my first year, lol?) Don’t amend the soil, if you’re planning to plant ‘desert plants’? How about the ‘hole should be 2-3 wide, but the same depth as the pot’? Look at how much you taught me in six months! (If they do decide to make some purchases at HD, save the receipts and black pots. HD has a one year, no question, guarantee. I just exchanged 2 5G pre-drip system Dodonea that were toast.)
