AZ Plant Lady Drive By: What’s Wrong With This Landscape?

wrong with the landscape

A few weeks ago, I introduced a new feature called “AZ Plant Lady Drive By”, where I show a photo of a landscape that I have driven by that has something wrong.

My goal is to help you avoid making the same mistake in your own landscape.

The response to my last one was overwhelming, so here is a new one for you to see if you can tell what is wrong.

Are you ready?

wrong with the landscape

As you can see, the landscape is well maintained.  But, there is one problem.

Leave a comment, with your guess about what is wrong with this landscape and I will post the answer in my next post.

Noelle Johnson, aka, 'AZ Plant Lady' is a author, horticulturist, and landscape consultant who helps people learn how to create, grow, and maintain beautiful desert gardens that thrive in a hot, dry climate. She does this through her consulting services, her online class Desert Gardening 101, and her monthly membership club, Through the Garden Gate. As she likes to tell desert-dwellers, "Gardening in the desert isn't hard, but it is different."

Not enough space in this yard for the very large Agaves so they have to give them the "pineapple" treatment and it's still not working. I'd also add low growing perennials to soften the starkness of the rock.

These plants, are they agave? They get huge, I know because I have a couple in my front landscaping. They are too close together in the front, and too close to the driveway on the side. Unless they are cutting the tips someone will get hurt walking up that driveway.

More than 1 thing wrong I see –
    1) Century Plant gets large, but it's in a small space
    2) spiky plants can injure people getting out of their vehicle on the driveway, or anyone passing by at arms' reach…even if you want to work on the front windows
    3) incompatible water needs from lawn and agaves

Great idea! I like the touch of leaving the rear view mirror in the photo, too. I may have to do these more.
