You know you are officially a desert-dweller, whic You know you are officially a desert-dweller, which you get excited when it rains. For garden enthusiasts like me, rain in the forecast won’t slow me down - even when I am out of town.

During my visit to Memphis as part of The Garden Fling, we dodged rainstorms to visit one of my favorite gardens.

It had a decided Mediterranean theme, which is my favorite style. I think it has a lot to do with growing up in Southern California where that is the prevailing style.

We had to wait inside our bus for the first wave of the forecasted thunderstorms to pass. My garden BFF, Andrea @andrea_whitelygarden and I almost always sit together when we tour gardens and go over our photos of gardens we just visited.

Finally, there was a break in the storm which gave us a good window of time to tour this beautiful garden.

Casa Rosa is the name of this beautiful home and property, which is about an acre in size. Ornamental grasses and coneflowers greeted us as we walked up the driveway.

Yuccas and Russian sage creates a dry garden feel, which is decidedly different from most garden styles of the region.

Coneflowers are a favorite flower of mine and as they don’t grow well in low desert climate, I make a point of enjoying them wherever I see them.

Do you have a favorite design style?

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’l If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know that I am a lover of blue pots!
I enjoy seeing other gardens that reflect a differ I enjoy seeing other gardens that reflect a different style than mine. There are so many ways to design a landscape, and the most successful ones (in my opinion) are those where the designer reflects the individual taste of the homeowner.

In a couple of Memphis gardens, the themes were rather unique. There weren’t colorful, flowering plants or splashes of vibrancy, but they still appealed to me..

In this first one, rather than a regular side gate leading into the backyard, a wooden doorway guides the eye to what lays beyond.

Instead of a regular fence in this side garden, wooden walls are framed out in sections with a wooden shadow box that each contain a sculpture.

In the second one, the muted deep charcoal background and black elements served to accentuate other parts of plants. The soft shades of variegated pittosporum contrast beautifully with the wooden walls. Dark colored scuptures and an uplit tree trunk creates an elegant and sophisticated look.

The brick patio color coordinates with the landscape rock creating a neutral backdrop to cool black chairs and containers filled with plants that have light-colored foliage. Again, emphazing the differences between light and dark.

Looking from the side yard to the front, I really enjoy the rich earth tones of the wood and how the shape of the tree trunk is accentuated by landscape lighting.

While most entries feature a potted plant, I love the detail here with candles at the base of the container that offer a welcoming glow. I plan on trying this out the next time I entertain.

Interesting side note - the owner of the second garden, is a director of The Grammy Awards. 🎶

Whether tucked among succulents, paired with flowering perennials, or nestled under a tree canopy, boulders add a sense of permanence and calm to your space.

Tip: Partially bury your boulder so it looks like it’s always been there—nature knows best!

If you have been with me for a while, you’ll kno If you have been with me for a while, you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of colorful pots.🪴

They can add interest and ‘pops’ of color to your garden when your flowering plants are not in bloom. This is especially true in winter.

Colorful pots can also be placed near your front door. Add shade loving plants in it to add beauty and texture.🏡

What is your favorite container color?
