Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to trave Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to travel to Memphis. While I’ve traveled through the South before, I had never been to this city. I was excited to see the gardens, but also to explore the birthplace of rock and roll. I toured Sun Studios with my friend Andrea and we got to go into the same recording room where Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash created their first hits. It was an amazing tour! Then it was time for us to visit Beale Street, which celebrates the city’s musical roots as the “Home of the Blues.” There are restaurants and live music venues. I loved all the signs - especially the angry pig. Memphis is famous for their BB!. We had lunch at BB King’s Blues Club and I love shrimp po’ boy sandwiches! I may have had more than one during my trip. I realize this isn’t a healthy lunch, but while traveling, eating the local cuisine is part of the exploration. Tomorrow, I’ll share some views of my favorite gardens that inspired me! In the meantime, I need to find a good shrimp po' boy recipe. 🍤 #bbkingbluesclub #memphis #sunstudio @andrea_whitelygarden

I came home earlier this week from a two week jour I came home earlier this week from a two week journey that extended to three states. My garden BGG Andrea Whitely joined me for this adventure which included lots of gardens! Our first city was Memphis where I joined The Garden Fling, which is a group of garden bloggers and social media influencers. While I knew many of the attendees, I also got to meet new friends. We were greeted by custom flower bouquets put together by local flower farmers and we each got one to put in our hotel rooms. On my first night in Memphis, I had to have BBQ which the city is famous for and Rendevous didn’t disappoint - it was delicious! Our first full day began at the Memphis Botanical Garden where breakfast and sangria awaited before we toured the beautiful grounds. I love the colorful birdhouses and sculptures throughout the garden. There were also plants that grow in my desert climate and it was fun to see how they use them. If you’ve tried to grow a magnolia tree in the desert - you know that they can struggle. Memphis abounds in huge magnolia trees which shows why it's often best to grow plants in the environment where they will thrive. They were in flower and their fragrance greeted us wherever we went. We took a group shot in the Japanese garden and thankfully, the bridge was sturdy enough to support us all. *Note that most of us are wearing Elvis sunglasses with sideburns. 😆 Our trip was definitely Elvis-themed as it is the place where he was discovered and recorded his music.
