I love the gray pads with shades of purple. The purple color deepens in cold temperatures or in times of drought.โ˜€๏ธ

In spring, yellow flowers cover this beautiful cactus. Hardy to Zone 8.  Plant in full sun with well drained soil.๐ŸŒผ

If you notice white cottony masses on your prickly pear, simply spray it off with a hose.  They are caused by an insect.

One of our iconic Sonoran Desert plants is the oco One of our iconic Sonoran Desert plants is the ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens) with its leaf covered canes topped with brightly colored flowers. 

Sometimes, people mistake ocotillo as a type of cactus, but they are a type of shrub. 

Ocotillo produces beautiful vermillion blooms that attract hummingbirds and their canes leaf out occasionally in response to humidity and rain.๐ŸŒจ

Fall is often referred to as โ€œsecond springโ€ i Fall is often referred to as โ€œsecond springโ€ in the desert southwest as plants take on a refreshed appearance.  This is due to cooler temperatures with many still producing flowers.๐ŸŒธ

Fall is also a time where we take a look around our garden setting and decide to make some changes.  It may be taking out thirsty old plants and replacing them with attractive, drought tolerant plants, or maybe creating an outdoor room by expanding a patio or perhaps adding a pergola.

Planting Tip - It is vital to realize that the little spindly tree that you plant WILL GROW. Be sure to check the mature size of any tree or plant, before planting, so you can be sure there is ample room for growth.๐Ÿก
