Have you ever embarked upon an unexpected adventure?

I recently did.

It all started with an email from the folks at Troy-Bilt who asked me to partner with them and review their outdoor power products in return for my honest opinion.

I had heard of Troy-Bilt company before and knew that they made high-quality gardening equipment.  But, I was curious about why they were contacting me.

It turns out that I was asked to be one of their six garden bloggers known as the ‘Saturday6’.

The ‘Saturday6’  is a group of six garden bloggers brought together by Troy-Bilt to share their gardening knowledge via their gardening newsletter, how-to videos and by reviewing Troy-Bilt equipment.

Troy-Bilt brought all of us together for an event-filled weekend in Scottsdale, AZ.

Five members of the ‘Saturday6’ flew in from destinations like Minnesota, Florida, Massachusetts, Tennessee and North Carolina.  I, however, just hopped into my truck and drove the 30 minutes to the hotel.

Our adventure started with a tour of the Desert Botanic Gardens in Phoenix.

Desert Botanic Gardens

Although, I have visited the gardens numerous  times, it was quite nice to have a guided tour and see the gardens through the eyes of those who are unfamiliar with desert plants.

garden bloggers

It was so nice to experience the gardens with fellow plant lovers (dare I say ‘plant fanatics?). We bonded over our shared love of plants and stopped constantly to take photos.

garden bloggers

The evening hours were spent enjoying a delicious dinner where we soon found ourselves immersed in our own ‘special’ language that all gardeners share.

I loved hearing about Dave’s Tennessee vegetable garden and how we enjoyed growing many of the same things.   Dave Townsend from Growing the Home Garden shared about his Tennessee vegetable garden and I found that we enjoyed growing many of the same things.

Steve Asbell of The Rainforest Garden had written for many of the same publications that I had.  What I didn’t know was that he is an incredibly talented illustrator and is currently writing a book.

Foreign concepts such as ‘winter sowing’ were explained to me by Amy of Get Busy Gardening who gardens in Minnesota.  Because she lives in very different climate from mine, it was fun to hear about some of the different ways we do things in the garden.

I was very blessed to spend time with Helen Yoest from Gardening With Confidence who is a ‘wiz’ at social media and has a new book.  She was very helpful in helping me to improve my mediocre social media skills.

Matt Mattus of Growing With Plants told me about the  30-year old Troy-Bilt rototiller that he uses on his 100-year old family farm in central Massachusetts.  He has a huge greenhouse where he grows tropical plants including South African bulbs.

Our first morning together was spent at a golf course, where we tested the many Troy-Bilt products and learned more about the company.

garden bloggers

The equipment laid out for us to try out, including both push and riding lawn mowers.

Troy-Bilt had their regional trainers on hand to show us how everything worked.

garden bloggers

Helen learns the finer points of driving this small-sized riding lawn mower, which fits through a standard garden gate, making it a great option for the smaller landscape.

The riding lawnmowers were the most popular piece of equipment we tested.

Steve tries out the push mowers

Steve tries out the push mowers.

The push mowers were fun to try as well.

Next, it was time to try out the leaf blower, which is a very popular tool here in the desert southwest.

You might wonder why I’m wearing a rain coat on a sunny day?  You’ll see why later…

I am tough on gardening equipment and if it is confusing to use or does not work well – I don’t endorse it. The hand-held leaf blower was easy to hold and a breeze to pull-start.

Dave learns about the features of Troy-Bilt string trimmers and how you can switch attachments like a cultivator, pole chainsaw, blower, etc.

I like digging dirt…especially with this small-sized rototiller.  I could use this to make another vegetable garden.

In addition to testing the equipment, we also had some fun…

As we went indoors to learn more about the equipment and the company, the skies began to darken…

garden bloggers

Then the skies opened up and it began to hail, a lot…

garden bloggers

It looks like snow, doesn’t it?

I don’t think my fellow bloggers expected a cold, wintery day in the desert.

After our training, we spent another evening together, enjoying dinner with the Troy-Bilt team.  It was fun to swap stories about our gardens with their challenges and successes.

Spring training is ‘big’ in Arizona.  So, I was excited that the next day’s events included a spring training game between the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs.

garden bloggers

We enjoyed bratwurst, hamburgers, peanuts and Cracker Jacks in the Budweiser tent.

You would think that we would be focused on the baseball game, but you’d be wrong.

The camaraderie we built was evident as we spent the entire time just talking.  Occasionally, we were distracted by a home run, but didn’t keep track of who was winning.

At the end of our event-filled weekend, I was even more excited to be a part of the ‘Saturday6’ and share what I know about gardening as well as having the opportunity to test Troy-Bilt products.

garden bloggers

I must admit that I’m in love with this small Neighborhood Rider.

I wonder if I can convince my husband to give up our push lawn mower?

One of the joys of gardening, is sharing it with others.

I have shared it with my kids and am now starting with my first grandchild, Lily.

Last week, we made a Valentine’s Day present for her mom and dad.

We started with a trip to the nursery…

Valentine's Day present

Valentine Day present

We bought two types of flowers for a fragrant container – Stock and Alyssum.

I already had the pot, the potting soil and slow-release fertilizer – so we were good to go.

Stock and Alyssum

Valentine Day present

When I had planned to do this with Lily – I had counted on my husband being there to take pictures of us.  But, he had to leave at the last minute to take the dog to the vet (abscessed tooth – he’s okay now).

So, I had to take the photos myself, while making sure that Lily didn’t fall off the bench – hence the picture, above, of her sitting in my lap.

She seemed pretty steady on the picnic bench, so I let her sit by herself for a few seconds for this picture…

Lily

She did just great, but I did have to teach her not to pull the flowers off – I think that is first lesson that I have had to teach each of my kids.

When my daughter came over to pick her up later that day – Lily had a pretty container of flowers to give to her mom.

Lily is 15-months old and at a great age to start letting her accompanying me in the garden.

Next week, I think we will pull some carrots from the vegetable garden for her to take home.

My two oldest daughters, don’t have any special interest in gardening – although I did try my best.

My 15-year old daughter, Ruthie, loves the vegetable garden.  I hope that she will continue to enjoy gardening as she grows up.

How about you?  Do you like to garden with your kids or grandkids?

December Blooms – Garden Blogger’s Bloom Day

Today was a beautiful winter’s day.  The temperature was a little above normal for this time of year.

We spent time out in the garden today with our granddaughter, Lily.

I spent time harvesting leaf lettuce, radishes, carrots and cauliflower for our dinner salad.

Picking Vegetables

I used our bounty to make a delicious salad for dinner.

The only thing from the grocery store in our salad was the cucumbers, which aren't in season until summer

The only thing from the grocery store in our salad was the cucumbers, which aren’t in season until summer.

As I was picking the vegetables earlier today, Lily was busy picking something entirely different…

Picking Vegetables or Rocks?

Rocks!

She absolutely loves to pick up rocks.

Thankfully, she doesn’t like to eat them 😉

houseplants

houseplants

Who knew that you could grow ‘houseplants’ using kitchen scraps?

I was inspired to find gardening projects that could be done indoors, for those gardeners who are stuck inside during cold winters.

The photos below were taken over a 14 day period from planting, to what they look like just 2 weeks later.  I must admit that I am quite impressed.

I started with growing a radish…

houseplants

I am hoping that my radish plant will flower at some point because I have heard that radish flowers are quite pretty.

houseplants

My garlic cloves grew quickly and I will use the greens as a garnish, much like I would use green onions.  Garlic greens have a mild garlic flavor.

Kitchen Scraps

My lentils are quite pretty and delicate looking.  I am waiting for them to flower, which will make them even prettier.

Kitchen Scraps

I realize that many people have grown a vine from a sweet potato – but I hadn’t tried it.  After it grows, the vine will be a pretty addition to my kitchen windowsill garden.  Now that the roots are growing, I will hopefully see some green sprouting on top.

Kitchen Scraps

I did have one plant that didn’t come up.  The book that I was inspired by said that you could plant fresh green beans, but mine didn’t grow.

**You can also plant dried beans after soaking them overnight and they should come up.

The goal of this project wasn’t to grow ‘food’, but to enjoy the foliage of the plants themselves and brighten up a dreary winter for those who live in cold climates.

I really had fun with this project.  I think it would be a great activity to do with kids, don’t you?

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL! I just finished watching the Rose Parade with my mother.  It’s a tradition in our family and reminds me of when my grandparents took me when I was a child.

We didn’t have tickets to the parade, so my grandfather carried a ladder from their house (which was close by) and set the ladder up at the edge of the parade route.  Each of us kids would take turns climbing to the top of the ladder to watch the parade.

Even though we didn’t see much of the parade, it is still such a special memory.

Well, Christmas is over and the decorations have all been put away.  But, we had a wonderful time over the Christmas holiday.

Here are a few highlights…

 Rose Parade

Baking Christmas cookies with my kids along with my young nephews.  Every year, I have all of them come over and we have so much fun making the cookies.  Then they get to take some home for ‘Santa’.

famous lasagna

Christmas Eve.  Every year, my mother-in-law makes her famous lasagna.  It is delicious.  But, she says that this is the last year that she will be making it.  So, I took a picture of it just in case no one else takes up making it in her place.

Twas

Each year, on Christmas Eve, all my kids (those that still live at home), ask me to read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’.  The dogs enjoy the story too 🙂

Happy New Year!

Christmas morning at our house.

Happy New Year!

After Christmas morning at our house, the entire family gathers at Double S Farms.  My granddaughter, Lily is excited about opening more gifts.  Well, not really.  She just likes to tear the tissue paper up into tiny pieces.

Happy New Year!

Our family just keeps getting bigger.

Happy New Year!

After we finished opening gifts, it was time for our ‘treasure hunt’.  This is a family tradition where my mother writes clues, which eventually lead us to our last Christmas gift.  We all work together to solve the clues.

This year’s hunt took us to the chicken coop and to my mother’s vegetable garden…

December

Doesn’t it look fabulous for December?

Anyway, here is where found one of the clues…

broccoli plant.

There was a note inside this broccoli plant.

 Rose Parade

After gifts were all opened, it was time to play outside.  The men and boys played football.  My twin nephews had fun on the toy tractor being pushed by their mom.

 Rose Parade

Lily wanted to play ball, but Johnny wasn’t going to share.

 Rose Parade

So, her aunt and cousins decided to give her a ride in the toy tractor.

 Rose Parade

Trees were climbed by my nephew, Oliver.

 Rose Parade

The ‘men’ had fun talking.

 Rose Parade

And my 2-year old nephew, Danny, finally got to ‘climb’ a tree with a little help from my daughter, Rachele.

 Rose Parade

My mother got her wish…a photo with all of her grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Although, this was a wonderful Christmas for me, it was also a little bittersweet.

 Rose Parade

My daughter, Rachele, holding her niece.

You see, my second oldest daughter, Rachele, is entering the Navy in April.  While I am so proud of her, I will miss her.  She will probably not be with us next Christmas.

And so, every memory from this past Christmas are extra special to me.

I have lots of plans for the garden this coming year  and some road trips.  So I will have lots to share with you.

AZ Plant Lady’s Christmas and New Year Newsletter

Did you have a nice Halloween?  Did you sneak a piece of candy from the bowl of candy you were handing out to trick-or-treaters?  Or maybe you take a piece or two or three from your kids?

I was so excited to be hosting our family’s annual Halloween party this year.

annual Halloween party

It was my granddaughter Lily’s first Halloween.  She missed Halloween by 3 days last year 😉

I had fun getting food ready before everyone came over…

annual Halloween party

‘Graveyard’ Guacamole.

Made with chopped olives and tortilla chips.

annual Halloween party

Pumpkin veggies.

Carrots with cucumbers.

annual Halloween party

‘Melted Witch’ cupcakes.

I used green and chocolate candy melts to make the ‘melted witch’ base.  Halloween Oreos and a Hershey’s Kiss made the hat.  A pretzel stick with molded lemon Starburst candies finished it off.

annual Halloween party

 Dessert Table.

Homemade Marshmallows Pops dipped in chocolate.

I used orange and chocolate candy melts to dip the marshmallows in.  Regular marshmallows from the store would work great for this too.

Our family get-togethers are often pot-luck and today was no exception.  My mom brought her delicious homemade chili.

Soon, it was time for the kids to get ready to go trick-or-treating…

annual Halloween party

My mother got her ‘witches’ costume ready.  Her twin grandsons weren’t quite sure who the witch was.  In fact, Danny (dressed as ‘Woody’) ran away and cried.

annual Halloween party

Even after she took off her mask and showed Danny that it was ‘grandma’ – he wouldn’t go near her until the end of the evening 😉

Aren’t they cute?

Lily’s first Halloween was fun.  She gave her candy away to her young aunts and uncle.

Danny kept us on the edge of our seats because he kept pointing to the firepit and saying “Hot”.  Thankfully, he didn’t touch it.

The twins loved my daughter, Rachele’s, classic VW Bug.

my brother, Scott

Dean with his dad (my brother, Scott) decided to check out my husband’s new motorcycle.

My sister, Grace

My sister, Grace, and my mom were so much fun to hang out with.

We had a wonderful time even though our kids were crashing after their sugar-highs.

I can’t wait until next Halloween!

How about you?

What did you do for Halloween?

**************************

I must admit that my thoughts have strayed to thinking of those who have been affected by the terrible storm ‘Sandy’.  For those who are suffering from the devastating effects from the storm ‘Sandy’ – you can help by sending a donation to the Red Cross, which will go directly to those affected by ‘Sandy’.

I love the Olympics…

Olympic Games

Actually, my entire family loves to watch them.  We eagerly await the opening ceremony and then spend the next 2 weeks glued to our television sets, rooting for our favorite athletes.

Now, you may think that since we like the Olympics so much, that we must all be athletes ourselves.

While a few of us are quite athletic – most of us aren’t so much (including me).

But, that didn’t stop us from preparing for the ‘Smith Family Summer Olympic Games’.

Olympic Games

Family Olympic Games

Our athletic event was to be held at Double S Farms, where my mom and sister (and her family) live.

My mother, who organizes this entire event, assigned to teams a few weeks ago and my sisters and I had fun making the t-shirts for our teams.

As we arrived for the big day, in our ‘nifty’ new Olympic t-shirts – it was time for face painting by my sister, Jennifer.

Olympic Games

My nephew, opted for an American flag on his nose…

Olympic Games

Now, it was time for the team pictures.

Team Great Britain

Team USA

Team USA

(Channeling the 70’s)

Team China

(Four members of our extended family are adopted from China).

And…

Team France

Team France

To keep everyone ‘honest’, we had two Olympic judges (my daughter and my mom) and three ‘Official Observers’ (my granddaughter Lily and twin nephews Danny & Dean).

Olympic Games

Now, it was time for the Olympic events!

Our first event was the ‘Mustache-Straw’ relay.

The photo below explains it all…

Olympic Games

If you dropped the straw, you had to stop and put it back up, run to the end and then run back to your team.  (I was terrible at this game).

Our next event was what my daughter referred to as the ‘SpongeBob’ relay.  The goal was to take a yellow sponge full of water and run to an empty container and squeeze out the water.

Olympic Games

The first team that filled up their container with water, won.

Olympic Games

My mother, one of the judges, kept an eye on everyone, making sure we were following the rules.

My sister, Grace, had great form…

Olympic Games

The third event was the ‘Water Balloon Shot-Put’.

Olympic Games

My mom explained the rules.  Whoever threw their water balloon furthest, won.

To make it fair – she broke up the competition into two parts; one for the kids and the other, for the adults.

Olympic Games

My brother-in-law, gave his son, pointers on how to throw the balloon.

Olympic Games

At this point, we heard thunder and saw storm clouds gathering fast.  We only had a little while left before the monsoon storm hit.

I had so much fun taking pictures of this event because I was able to capture everyone’s great ‘form’ 😉

Olympic Games

My sister, Grace, had a great throw.

Olympic Games

My sister-in-law, Marisue, did great while my brother looked on.

Olympic Games

My brother-in-law, Jason, decided to go with ‘granny-style’.

Now, it was the kid’s turn and we had to hurry, because it was beginning to rain and lightening wasn’t far off.

Double S Farms

I love how my son, Kai, puts his all into his effort.

Double S Farms

Next, it was my nephew, Oliver’s, turn.

(Can you see the Gatorade on his t-shirt 😉

We just barely finished the event and then it started to pour down rain. Thankfully, our last few events were indoors.

Olympic Games

Now, it was time for Shooting.

Double S Farms

My daughter, Rachele, was up first.

Double S Farms

Then it was Gracie’s turn.

Olympic Games

My brother gave my sister pointers on shooting.

Olympic Games

Then it was my turn – I hit one of the targets.

Finally, it was my husband’s turn….

Olympic Games

My husband is the expert shooter in the family.

But, I beat him!  To be fair though, I taught me how to shoot years ago 😉

Our last event was Diving.

Olympic Games

We had to throw a sponge ball into a container of water.

All too soon, the events were over and the scores tallied.

Now it was time to eat!

Olympic party

We had Cornish ‘pasties’ for dinner and English trifle for dessert – delicious!

Then it was time for our medal ceremony.

Olympic party

My mom had created our Olympic medals from ribbon and large metal washers from the hardware store.

We had to sing the national anthem from each country.

It was a fabulous day and I can hardly wait for the Smith Family Winter Olympic Games in 2 years!

**How about you?  Do you find yourself glued to the television, watching the Olympics?

Have you ever had an Olympic party?

The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat

Have you ever traveled through a part of Route 66?

Route 66 through Springfield, Illinois

Route 66 through Springfield, Illinois

For me, I love the pure sense of ‘Americana’ that seems to pervade this historic route that travels through Illinois all the way to California.

Grand Canyon Railway

Every summer, my family and I spend a week up in Williams, Arizona.  For those of you unfamiliar with this small town – it is the ‘Gateway to the Grand Canyon’ and is home to the ‘Grand Canyon Railway’, which brings people up to the Grand Canyon itself.

Williams, Arizona

Williams, Arizona

Many tourists visit this little town on their way to the Grand Canyon.  As you walk down the main street, you hear many different languages.

Williams, Arizona

Williams, Arizona

Williams is up in the mountains and is approximately 3 hours north of Phoenix and a half-hour west of Flagstaff.

As you enter the town and cross the railroad tracks, you are greeted by the sight of the Red Garter and its ‘loose’ woman waving from the top window, above.

Williams, Arizona

Both sides of the main street, which straddles Route 66 is contains a mixture of stores, restaurants and local businesses.

Each year, in preparation for our trip – my kids save up their allowance to spend in some of their favorite stores.

Williams, Arizona

One of our first stops was at a new store called Alien Jerky.  To be honest, I had no idea what was in store for us when we went through the door…

Williams, Arizona

We met some resident aliens while we shopped their selection of specialty nuts, jerky, old-fashioned soda and candy…

Williams, Arizona

Soda like ‘Sioux City’ Root Beer, ‘Brain Wash’ Carbonated Soda, ‘Death Valley’ Black Cherry were awfully tempting to try.

But, my daughter, Gracie, decided to buy some candy from their unique selection, which included Sonic, Pac-man, Hello Kitty and Betty Boop.

Williams, Arizona

Gracie chose the Sonic candy.

On our way out of the store, we said goodbye to one of the aliens…

Williams, Arizona

As you walk down the street, you expect to see examples of cool neon signs…

I would love to spend only $3.50 for a hotel room, wouldn’t you?  Too bad I am over 50 years too late.

Williams, Arizona

What you don’t always expect is another aspect of what makes traveling along Route 66 fun.

Here is a sampling of what we ran into…

Williams, Arizona

Did you know that Elvis can be spotted on the main street?

Williams, Arizona

You can also find an Indian with a headdress made out of feather-shaped lollipops.

Cruisers Cafe

One of the more popular restaurants is Cruisers Cafe.

Route 66

They also have a pretty cool mural painted along the patio wall.

Iconic Discoveries

The kids met up with one of their favorite characters…

Iconic Discoveries

Gracie used to be terrified of him because he talks, moves and even ‘farts’.  But now that she is older, she could handle standing next to him for me to take a picture 😉

old gas pumps

There are of course, antiques that pop up now and then like the old gas pumps, above.

old gas station

This old gas station has been turned into a museum that harkens back to the past of Route 66.

Of course, one of the fun things that we enjoy doing is eating on Route 66.  So, we headed down to our favorite restaurant…

Quirky and Iconic Discoveries Along Route 66

My son, Kai, was in charge of pushing Lily in her stroller (Lily is our granddaughter and Kai is her uncle).

Quirky and Iconic Discoveries Along Route 66

On our way, we passed a hotel with a map of the entire Route 66.  Someday, I would like to travel this route.  So far, I have been to parts in Illinois, Missouri, Arizona and California.

Quirky and Iconic Discoveries Along Route 66

On our way to the restaurant, we passed a few more shops, likes this one with the ‘largest Route 66 sign’.  We were so hungry, that we didn’t go in.

Quirky and Iconic Discoveries Along Route 66

This was where my husband spent his ‘allowance’ – on pie 😉

You can’t see the couple that well in the photo, but he had a hairstyle that looked a lot like Elvis’s hair…

Quirky and Iconic Discoveries Along Route 66

Thank you for taking the time to look through my Route 66 photos.

We had a great time and I have one more part of our trip that I can’t wait to share with you…

Believe me, you won’t believe the ‘story’ I have to tell you in my next post.

One of the things that I love about living in the Southwest, is the monsoon season that arrives every summer.

Sporadic, often violent storms come and dump a lot of rain in a short amount of time.

To deal with the large amount of water, you will see catchment basins in neighborhoods and also around businesses.  These catchment basins help to keep areas from flooding.

monsoon season

monsoon season

In our neighborhood, we have a few catchment basins and when they fill up, it is time for fun…

monsoon season

My husband, our two youngest kids and our dogs came out to play in the water.

The dogs jumped right in….so did the kids.

Our two little dogs, Tobey and Max had to swim because the water was so deep.

I was surprised that they liked it as much as they did.

Wet Weather and Two Races...

Gracie and Kai decided to race across the water.

Wet Weather and Two Races...

Gracie won, but then I think that Kai fell on purpose because he wanted to get wet all the way.  It’s funny how that seems to happen to Kai a lot.

Wet Weather and Two Races...

Tobey took a break from the fun and watched Kai challenge Max to a race…

We had fun playing in the water, but soon it was time for the fun to end.

Kai needed a little help getting home….

From Blue Sky to Dust…

Do you have a special place that you spend your vacation every year?

Our family is very blessed to have a special place to visit every summer.

Now, when I say ‘family’ – I mean my mother, sisters, brother and their families as well.  It really helps that we all really like each other and get along.

Our special place is in Williams, AZ and is approximately 3 hours away and is up in the mountains.

 special place

My sister-in-law’s family owns a few cabins up there and they always make them available to all of us.

We look forward to this trip all year long.

 special place

Cousins play together during the day.

 special place

We go fishing…. a lot!

 special place

We play games.

Deer Farm

We visit local attractions, such as the Deer Farm.

Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is close by too.

Grand Canyon

Our first year that we visited, we all came up along with my parents.

They treated us all to a trip on the Grand Canyon Railway for a train ride up to the Grand Canyon…

special place

We were visited by some train robbers on the way though…Kai looks petrified doesn’t he?

special place

Thankfully, the sheriff showed up and arrested them.  He stopped to pose with Gracie too 😉

special place

My parents had a great time too – although as soon as we arrived at the Grand Canyon – they ditched us kids and spent the day alone 😉

The next year, we decided not to go to our special place.  The reason for this is that we had a huge family trip planned in my grandmother’s memory to Europe.

We were all very excited to go.  But sadly, just 3 weeks before we were to go, my dad died suddenly.  So, we cancelled our Europe vacation and decided to go to back to our special place to rest, grieve and have a little fun if possible…

special place

Despite our grief, we did have fun.  There was the treasure hunt (courtesy of my mom).

special place

We followed our map to the treasure…

special place

We found the treasure – $1 gold coins for everyone!

special place

We spent time in town, which is on Route 66 and has some fun, quirky stores and ‘people’.

special place

We saw some ‘loose women’ in town.  Not really, just my sisters, sister-in-law and me 😉

We like to take lots of pictures on vacation since we are all together.

Family Vacation

But this time, we could feel my dad’s absence.

We did all wear our matching track jackets that we had made for our Europe trip.*Even though it looks like there are quite a few people in our family – we have added 5 people since then.

Family Vacation

The next year we visited, the kids had fun sailing boats that my husband had made for them.

Family Vacation

My son, Kai, was so proud of his boat with his homemade sail.

Family Vacation

Kai had just had surgery a few weeks before our trip, but it didn’t keep him from bowling and fishing.

In fact, his favorite superhero came up to see him…

Family Vacation

‘Super-Duper’ made a surprise visit and challenged Kai’s cousins to a race.  Kai in his wheelchair and his cousins had a go-kart.

Kai and ‘Super-Duper’ won.

In case you are wondering….’Super-Duper’ is actually Kai’s uncle, who is a children’s pastor who just happens to play many characters for the kids at his church.

*Believe it or not, Kai didn’t know Super-Duper’s secret identity when this happened 😉

Family Vacation

The next year, Kai was back up on his feet and ready for fishing.

Family Vacation

We had great luck fishing that day.

Family Vacation

Every year, we also visit Twister’s for hamburgers, hot dogs and great ice-cream sundaes.  Then we visit the nightly shootout with the cowboys downtown – strictly for the tourists, of course.

Family Vacation

Each family takes turns making dinner for everyone and we get to taste each others delicious cooking.  Then, in the evening, we walk from our cabins down to the road to see the deer and elk come down for the night.

Family Vacation

The kids all pose for our annual family photos.

Family Vacation

Sometimes, they get a bit silly.

This year, we will do much of the same including more fishing…

Family Vacation

AND there is a new family member to come along…

Family Vacation

It’s hard to believe that just a year ago she wasn’t even here yet.

**Thank you for letting me share some of our vacation photos from past years.  I’m sure I will have more from this year to show you all – of course, you might have gotten your fill of seeing my vacation photos by now 😉

**Do you have a special place that you visit?  Where do you go and what do you do?
