I like to refer to the outdoor spaces around my home as a garden. It’s not perfect but filled with color and beauty where the outside world seemingly melts away.
Many of you have asked to see more of my garden, and I decided that the best way to do that is to give you a video tour. Part 1 focuses on my flowering trees, colorful foliage, and my vegetable garden.

It is said that there are those who love to travel and those who love to garden. So what do you get when you pair the two together? A garden adventure!
For those of you who have followed my blog for awhile, the fact that I enjoy traveling is no secret, and I frequently share my travels with you all. This particular trip was to Savannah, Georgia along with the folks at Troy-Bilt, who I work with as a brand ambassador. Several garden bloggers from across the country are brought together to learn about the latest Troy-Bilt products, tour a garden, and participate in a service project, all of which, take place within 2-3 days.
This is my third outing with Troy-Bilt, and I was thrilled to learn that this year’s event was in Savannah. I had visited once before and could hardly wait to revisit some of the same places as well as explore new ones in the little free time that I had.
I arrived in Savannah the night before and didn’t have a meeting until later in the afternoon, so I woke up ready to walk through the historic section of the city. For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to visit this city, it is quintessentially southern filled with period architecture and beautifully restored buildings.
Our hotel, The Brice, is a lovely hotel in a historic building right in downtown Savannah. All you need is a comfortable pair of walking shoes, and you can walk to most of the popular destinations.
I must confess that I felt particularly liberated and free as I began my walk. There was no work that I had to attend to, no kids to take care of – just three hours of free time to do whatever I wanted, which was to explore my surroundings.
‘Window Selfie’
Whenever I travel, I like to observe the plants of the region. In the warm regions of the South, Spanish moss is the most iconic feature as it drapes across majestic oak trees.
You can even find it intertwined on shrubs and other plants. Spanish moss isn’t really a moss, but rather an ‘epiphyte’ that receives the nutrients and moisture that it needs from the air. Unlike parasitic plants like mistletoe, Spanish moss doesn’t have roots and doesn’t take nutrients from other plants; they just hang from them. In fact, they are a type of air plant (Tillandsia).
Planters were filled with luscious combinations of colorful annuals and perennials like this one planted with blue lobelia, red verbena, orange agastache, burgundy salvia, and snapdragons.
One of the many things that I like about traveling is to see historic buildings and landscapes as here in the Southwest; there are very few. For example, you probably wouldn’t see a sign like this in Arizona. I did climb the stairs by the way and didn’t fall.
Downtown Savannah is filled with historic buildings and large oak trees that provide welcome shade. Unique shops and restaurants invite you to step inside and tempt you with their offerings.
An example of the temptations that await is ‘Funky Bread,’ which is basically monkey bread – and delicious! I must say that I didn’t plan on eating something so fattening for breakfast – but I did!
The colorful clothing displayed in the window of this downtown boutique had me making a detour from my route. I didn’t plan on buying any clothes on this trip – but I did that too! A new dress doesn’t take up much room in a suitcase, right?
After giving into the temptation of delicious, high-calorie food as well as buying clothes, for the rest of my walking tour, I avoided going into any more stores.
All too soon, it was time to wrap up my morning walk and get ready for my first meeting.
Shortly after our meeting at the hotel, we all headed out for a personal tour of the Coastal Georgia Botanic Gardens. This garden is known for the bamboo planted around it, which was planted by the original owner of the land.
*Note the gathering storm clouds – they will play a part in our adventures later in the day.
Our tour was led by the director of the gardens and we visited several sections. Perhaps the most famous section is one filled with many different species of camelliasmany of which, are relatively rare. I don’t grow camellias as they are somewhat hard to grow in Arizona and I stay away from plants that are hard to grow, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t enjoy them in other areas.
Savannah and Phoenix have similar minimum winter temperatures, which means that we can grow many of the same plants such as citrus, lantana, salvia, etc. However, this is a plant that doesn’t grow here, but I liked it just the same. This is called ‘tractor seat’ plant(Farfugium japonicum ‘Gigantea’). I don’t think I’ll ever forget the name of this one as its leaves do resemble the seat of a tractor.
Last fall, on a visit to Atlanta, I noted that many gardens had bird houses mounted on poles. This garden had them too, and I like how it looks. How about you?
Containers in my favorite shade of blue decorated the garden, filled with an assortment of plants noted for their foliage. Colorful containers are one of my favorite ways to add color to shady areas where flowering plants won’t grow.
They had a xeriscape garden filled with familiar plants such as agave, bulbine, and salvias. In a more humid climate, the leaves of these plants were larger than those that grow in drier regions of the country, like the Southwest.
A garden filled with raised beds was created especially for those with disabilities. I found it quite beautiful with beds filled with flowers and vegetables.
This citrus tree certainly looks a bit different from those grown in drier regions. Note the lichen growing on the trunk and the Spanish moss hanging from the branches.
The orchid house is filled with colorful varieties that had many of us taking close-up photographs. Have you ever grown an orchid indoors? I’ve grown two and got them to flower, but then got lazy and didn’t take care of them, which leads me to confess that I am not very good at raising houseplants.
As we got ready to leave, storm clouds were gathering on the horizon, and the wind was picking up. Although the garden had a new weather station, they kept this old one, sheltered underneath a colorful loropetalum.
Severe thunderstorms were in the forecast for most of Georgia, including Savannah. Back at the hotel as I was getting ready for dinner, I turned on the local news where the entire broadcast was dedicated to the tornado warnings for Atlanta AND Savannah! In fact, they had their camera focused on the clouds with my hotel directly underneath. But, did that keep us from going out to dinner?
Nope. The weather held off until we entered the restaurant and thankfully, no tornadoes.
We did enjoy fabulous food, and I decided that an important part of traveling is enjoying the cuisine of where you are visiting. By the way, I learned that ‘yardbird’ means chicken and that brownies covered in strawberries and whipped cream are heavenly!

Fall Blooming Shrubs, Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia leucantha)
Summer temperatures are fading and it’s time to get back outdoors and enjoy the beauty surrounding our homes. When many plants begin to slow down blooming, there are some that are just getting started including these fall-blooming shrubs.
This time of year is very busy for me as many of my clients are ready to focus on their garden. However, as busy as I get, I try to find some time to sit outside and enjoy the colorful plants in my own garden.

Fall is the best time for adding new plants to the landscape, so this is a great time to take a look at your garden and see where you would like to see some welcome autumn color.

This is what my mother’s vegetable garden looks like in the middle of winter.
She works hard at growing a variety of vegetables in her two raised beds. On Wednesday nights, we all gather for dinner at her house and get to enjoy many of the delicious vegetables straight from her garden.
Sadly, her plans for this season’s vegetable garden faced a serious setback.
My mother fell and broke her leg while cooking dinner with my youngest daughter. Both bones in her lower leg suffered multiple fractures, and a metal rod had to be inserted down into her tibia.
Understandably, she cannot put any weight on her foot for at least two months. So, while she works hard at physical therapy to gain as much independence as she can – we decided to help out with her garden.
My kids, along with my nephews, were eager to help with Grandma’s garden. We stopped by the nursery to pick up broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and leaf lettuce transplants while I brought some carrot and radish seeds from home.
Lucky for us, she had already amended her soil with one of my favorite soil amendments – used coffee grounds (from Starbucks). I added some of my favorite organic vegetable fertilizer for the garden, and we were ready to start planting.
I instructed the kids on where and how to plant the vegetable transplants in staggered rows.
My sister was also watching us and even stepped in to help out, despite the fact that she never gardens.
The kids were eager to help out their grandmother, and we all enjoyed out time out in the garden.
I took a few photos to bring back to her at the rehabilitation facility where she is recuperating, to show her what her grandkids had done for her.
My mother is doing well and is working hard at her daily physical therapy sessions so that she can get home as soon as possible. We visit her daily, and her room has pictures drawn by her grandchildren and cards from friends and family.
On our most recent visit, my grandson discovered the delights of pushing around his grandpa using great-grandma’s wheelchair. His smile and laughter brightened everyone’s day.
Meanwhile, back at the vegetable garden.
I came back to check on the newly planted vegetables. Most were doing quite well, but I did see a few plants with telltale holes in their leaves.
I discovered the culprit nearby. Cutworms are caterpillars that eat holes in leafy vegetables as well as ‘cut’ off young vegetable transplants at their base.
The cutworms did kill some of the newly transplanted broccoli, but most of the leafy greens were fine other than a few holes in the leaves.
I brought my favorite organic pesticide, BT (Bacillus thuringiensis), which kills the caterpillars. I like to use Safer Brand 5163 Caterpillar Killer II Concentrate, 16 oz in my own garden, which helps keep the caterpillars at bay.
I sprayed all the vegetables, taking care to spray both top and underneath the leaves.
BT can be reapplied every 7 – 10 days until the caterpillars are gone.
**Note; it can be hard to find BT in your local big box store or even some nurseries. However, you can find it offered online from garden supply companies and Amazon (affiliate link).

There is nothing better than enjoying a lovely view of your garden, (while sitting with your feet up), after being out of town for several days.
I’ve spent the past several days in Atlanta, Georgia, touring gardens, learning from educational sessions, networking, and socializing at this year’s annual Garden Communicator’s Symposium.
A few days before I left for the conference, I hosted my dear friend, Andrea, who flew all the way from Australia to me in Arizona for a few days before we both left for Atlanta, Georgia.
I got in late last night and relished sleeping in my own bed – there is truly no better feeling after a long day of traveling and sleeping in a hotel bed.
I try to keep my schedule light the day after I get home from a trip and today is no different. So what’s on the schedule today? Catching up on my favorite television shows while going through business cards from new contacts I met, working my way through the large pile of mail waiting for me, deciding where in the garden to put the new plants I was given at the conference, and deciding what new garden samples to try first in my garden.

Most of us are familiar with the idea of using ground covers in the landscape and how they can add a welcome carpet of color.

But, you may be surprised to find that they serve another purpose that is especially appreciated in hot climates. Ground covers help to reduce the heat from the sun. They do this by preventing the sun from heating up the ground that they cover. When the ground heats up, it absorbs heat only to re-radiate it outward. So, using ground covers is just one way to help cool down the landscape by a degree or two.

Thankfully, there are steps that you can take to learn about your landscape, the plants in it, how to care for them and what types of new plants will do well.
Believe it or not, it doesn’t matter what region you live in – the steps are the same.
In my last post, I shared about my daughter’s move from Arizona to Michigan. She and her husband became new homeowners the beginning of this summer and were faced with many questions about their landscape.
I invite you to join them in their garden journey, learning helpful tips finding out about their new landscape, what plants to choose, and how to care for them.
Even if you live in a completely different climate than Michigan, my hope is that you’ll learn what steps to take when you find yourself in a new place with no clue how to take care of your garden.
How to gardening in a new climate
1. Take stock of the existing landscape.
We walked around the entire landscape, including the areas up against the house and further out. The front of their home had a combination of shrubs, perennials, and flowering bulbs while the outer areas had a number of different trees.
Lilac shrubs were in full bloom and peonies were just beginning to open…
I must admit to being slightly envious since my Arizona garden doesn’t get cold enough in winter to be able to grow these lovely plants. However, I was fortunate to be there when hers were in bloom.
2. Take pictures of large areas as well as individual plants – particularly those that you don’t recognize.
How to gardening in a new climate
While I knew what most of the plants were in my daughter’s landscape, she didn’t and there were a few that even I couldn’t identify (plants from more temperate climates aren’t my specialty).
If you see something that you think is wrong with your plants, take a picture of that too. I wasn’t sure what was growing on the surface of the maple trees. (It turns out they are leaf galls, which are fairly common and don’t seriously impact the tree.)
3. Visit a local nursery.
You will find most of your answers at a local plant nursery. Show the nursery staff pictures of your plants. They can help you identify what you have and can often tell you how to care for them.
How to gardening in a new climate
Often, you will find the same plants at the nursery, where you can check the labels for the names along with instruction on how to care for them.
We found that the shrubs alongside the house are ‘dappled willow’.
During your visit, take pictures of plants that you like along with a clear photo of the plant label. But, avoid buying anything at this point.
Be sure to show pictures to the nursery professionals of any suspected problems of your plants. They can often tell you what it is and how to treat it, if needed.
Local nurseries often have free (or inexpensive) guides on a range of gardening subjects. Be sure to ask if they have any.
**I advise against going to a big box store for advice on plants. Not all the staff is particularly knowledgeable and you’ll often find plants for sale that aren’t always suited for that climate. Local nurseries are best.
For example, I found this Texas sage for sale at the local big box store. The problem is that this shrub can only handle temperatures as cold as 10 degrees F. In northern Michgan, winter temperatures can get down to -20 degrees. Unfortunately, this isn’t isolated to just this instance – it happens everywhere. So, visit local nurseries for the best advice and plant selection.
4. Contact the local cooperative extension office.
If you’ve never heard of cooperative extension services, you are missing out on a valuable resource. They are an “educational partnership that offers numerous programs implemented by county field faculty and supported by university-based specialists”.
Master Gardeners work for the cooperative extension office in your area, which is usually divided up by counties.
They have many resources for homeowners, especially in regards to their landscape, that is specifically tailored for that specific region. Often, much of the information can be found online and/or you can talk to a master gardener on the phone.
Here are some helpful questions to ask:
– What USDA planting zone do you live in?
– What type of soil is present in the area? Acidic or alkaline? That’s important to know since certain plants do better in one or the other.
– What is the average first and last frost date? In other words, how long is the growing season? For my garden in Arizona, the growing season is 10 months long while my daughter’s is only 6 months.
– When is the best time to prune roses, trees and shrubs?
– What are the planting dates for specific vegetables?
– Are there any insect pests that are particularly troublesome? How do you get rid of them?

5. Take pictures of local landscapes and plants that you like.
When you are walking your dog or taking a stroll through the downtown area, grab your phone and take photos of plants that you like.
How to gardening in a new climate
If it’s growing and looks healthy, than it will probably grow in your garden. You can take the photos to your local nursery to help you identify what they are.
6. Wait 6 months to a year before making dramatic changes to the garden.
A garden undergoes several transformations throughout the year as plants bloom, change colors and fade. It is helpful to observe the plants, to see what you want to keep and those that you went to remove.
In addition, this is also a period of time to see how functional the design of your garden is. If plants are struggling, it may be because they are planted in the wrong exposure, get too wet from storm runoff or don’t have enough room to grow.
Once you have lived with your new landscape for awhile, it’s time to make changes.

My love affair with canning began a few years ago when I made my first batch of jam, under the guidance of my mother and I have never looked back.
The inspiration for me wanting to learn how to can food came with the family farm, which had a mini-orchard filled with apple, peach, and plum trees. Since then, I’ve made blackberry, peach, plum, and strawberry jams as well as applesauce.
In fact, I enjoyed canning so much, that I planted apple and peach trees in my garden.
I must admit that it took me a long time to decide what recipe to choose because all of them were so tempting. Who wouldn’t want to make blueberry-lemon jam, grapefruit marmalade, raspberry-lemonade jam, or vanilla bean-citrus marmalade?
In addition to creative jam recipes, there are also many delicious recipes for preserving fruits and vegetables as well as savory selections.
In the end, I chose to make a variation of nectarine-sour cherry jam.
For this recipe, you could use blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, or even strawberries in place of the sour cherries. Because my husband and kids love blueberries, that’s what I chose.
Isn’t the color combination beautiful?
As it cooked, the jam mixture began to turn a delicious shade of purple.
Once the jam was finished cooking, I poured it into sterilized mason jars and processed it in a boiling water canner.
Now, I have seven jars filled with delicious jam for my morning toast.
It’s important to note that the cookbook doesn’t have a beginners section for those learning how to can and preserve fruit and vegetables – its focus is more on creative, canning recipes.
The equipment needed for canning isn’t expensive or complicated to use.

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the television camera?
What we often see is just a small portion of what goes on behind the scenes as I have learned during my occasional appearances on television.
Today, I thought that I would let you see what goes on behind the scenes getting ready for a gardening segment on television. I documented what went on behind the scenes of my television appearance last Friday.
You may be surprised to find that appearing on camera is the easiest part. Here is how it all happens…
– Typically a week ahead of time, I am contacted by the producer of the show I am being asked to appear on. They give me a general gardening topic and then send me a guest sheet to fill out. On the guest sheet, I list general questions for the host to ask and send in photos for them to use in the segment as well.
– Two days before my scheduled appearance, I visit my local nursery to get the plants and other ‘props’ that I will need.
– The day before, I am busy ‘cleaning’ up the plants – removing any dead leaves and/or flowers and wiping down the nursery containers with a wet rag to remove any dirt. Often, I plant some of the plants in decorative pots. Believe it or not, I have a stash of ‘props’ that I only use when I appear on television, which I will show you later.
The next day begins with an early arrival at the television station. Plants are unloaded onto large plastic carts located in the television station’s lobby for transporting props.
I usually bring someone with me to help me set up. For me, it’s usually a family affair with various members of my family accompanying me. This time, my nephew came along to help. He recently graduated from the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences and I thought that he would like to experience the workings of a television studio.
There is security in the lobby and only those on the list are allowed to enter. Guests are expected to arrive 1 hour before the show airs.
After entering, you are shown to the ‘green room’ where you wait with others who will also appear on the program.
Most often, I bypass the green room as I am shown directly to the outdoor area in back of the studio where I will set up. Along the way, we pass the newsroom.
In the outdoor area there is typically a rectangular table set up for me and I get to work on setting up my props.
When selecting props, color is an important element, so I always try include colorful flowers whenever possible.
In this case, I was asked to talk about what to plant in winter, so I picked out the most colorful annuals that my local nursery had – in this case, primrose.
Earlier, I mentioned that I have a stash of ‘props’ that I use when I am to appear on television. Well, I used three of them; a hand shovel, a hand rake as well as a galvanized steel container. I don’t use them in the garden so that they will always look nice and I’m not having to clean them. A nice pair of leather garden gloves usually appear alongside my other props as well.
Setting up my props is called ‘staging’ and I must admit that it’s not my strongest suit. In general, tall plants go in the back with smaller ones in front.
My sisters and mother are very good at staging and have been especially helpful when they have come with me when appearing on television.
However this time, I was on my own when it came to arranging my plants and props.
This is the perspective from where I will stand when talking in front of the camera. The small TV shows a live feed of what is currently being broadcast and is helpful when being interviewed since I can see what the viewers see – especially when the photos I sent in are shown on screen so I can speak directly about them.
About a half-hour before my segment, a producer comes out and sets up my mike, which is threaded through my clothes and clipped to my collar.
After a busy morning of getting up early, loading plants, driving to the studio, unloading plants and staging plants and getting ‘miked’ – it’s time to sit and wait until it is time for my segment to go on.
Since my segment is being filmed on the back patio and not inside the studio, I usually spend my time in the break room waiting until the television host comes to find me to talk about the upcoming segment.
It’s interesting to note that I never know before I get to the station, when I will be on. I’ve been on at the beginning, middle and end of the show – I prefer to be on at the beginning instead of waiting.
Shortly before my segment, a ‘teaser’ is shown with close-ups of my plants being shown after which, a commercial is shown.
During the commercial, the host talks to me about what I brought and we both go over what I will talk about.
Finally, it is time for my live segment. At this point, everything goes very fast.
My four minute garden segment feels like it only takes one minute to do. I admit that this is the part that I like best – helping people learn how to enjoy their garden and hopefully inspiring them to try something new. In this case, we talked about adding lettuce and other leafy green alongside colorful annuals in pots.
If being on camera makes you nervous, it helps to just talk directly to the host and try to ignore the camera. I do that most of the time, but I do try to talk directly to the camera a few times as well.
After the segment is over, I load my things back onto the plastic cart and leave. Sometimes, I make it home before the program is over.
Later in the day, I receive an email from the producer with a link to my garden segment. I don’t like to watch myself on TV a lot, but I do watch it once to make sure that I didn’t make any mistakes. Every time I go on, I find myself becoming a little more comfortable with the process.
